Makeup for mature skin
Makeup for older women, over 50 and over 60, works best with less product in thinner layers. Skin often gets drier and shows more texture, and a thick foundation or a heavy powder settles into fine lines. Apply a light base with your fingers or a damp sponge, swap powders for creams where you can, and put the colour on your cheeks and lips.
Every picture below is one of our looks on a woman in her late 50s or 60s, with fine lines and glasses. The lightest is No-Makeup Makeup, a skin tint, cream blush and a clear balm. When you try one on your own selfie, the result keeps your skin as it is and adds only the makeup.

- Moisturise and wait a few minutes before your base. Then press a skin tint or a thin satin foundation into the areas that need it, instead of covering the whole face.
- Set only where you get shine, often the sides of the nose and the chin, with a finely milled powder. Leave the cheeks and the skin around the eyes unpowdered so the base stays smooth over lines.
- Use a cream blush and blend it upward from the apples toward the cheekbone. Natural Makeup taps a soft rose cream blush onto the apples and blends it up.
- On crepey lids, matte and satin shadows sit smoother than chunky glitter. Keep any shimmer fine and on the centre of the lid, and smudge a soft pencil into the lashes in place of liquid liner.
- Line your lips with a pencil and fill them in with it before lipstick, to stop colour bleeding into the lines around the mouth. Classic Red Lip uses a matching red liner to keep the edge sharp.
- Fill thinning brows with fine hair strokes from a sharp pencil, then set them with a tinted gel. Strokes look more like real hair than a solid block of powder.
Questions
- Should I wear foundation over 60?
- You can, in a lighter form. A skin tint or a thin satin foundation applied only where you need it looks more like skin than a full layer. No-Makeup Makeup uses a skin tint and puts concealer only on spots and under the eyes.
- Is powder bad for mature skin?
- No, but use less of it. A heavy layer sits in fine lines and looks dry. Press a finely milled translucent powder only where you get shine, with a small brush or a puff.
- Which lipstick shades work best over 50?
- Mid-tone shades with some depth show up well, such as rose, berry, mauve and true red. Very pale nudes can wash the lips out. Satin and cream formulas feel more comfortable on dry lips than long-wear mattes.
