Eyeshadow and makeup for brown eyes

Brown eyes work with almost any eyeshadow colour, so choose by how much contrast you want. Brown is a deep orange, which puts blues like navy and cobalt opposite it on the colour wheel. Plums and purples also bring out the warmth. Gold and bronze pick up any amber or honey flecks in the iris.

The pictures show our looks on women with brown eyes and medium, tan or deep skin. Indian Bridal Makeup pairs gold on the lid with deep red-maroon in the crease. Festival Glitter adds a bright blue liner along the lower lashes. Try one on your own selfie to compare blue liner and gold shimmer next to your iris.

Eyeshadow tips for brown eyes

  • Swap black for a navy, cobalt or teal pencil along the lower lash line. A thin line of blue next to a brown iris gives contrast without a full coloured eye.
  • Plum, aubergine and mauve in the crease work on brown eyes of any depth. Pair them with a champagne or gold lid.
  • Pack metallic gold, bronze or copper onto the centre of the lid over a little concealer or a sticky base, so the metal shows at full strength.
  • Match the liner's depth to your eye. Brown or bronze looks softer on light brown eyes, and black gives very dark brown eyes a clear edge.
  • Blend a warm brown through the crease first, then add plum, navy or green on top. The brown underneath gives the colour a soft edge.

Questions

What eyeshadow colour makes brown eyes pop?
Blue and purple shades give the strongest contrast, since they sit across the colour wheel from the orange tones in brown. Navy, cobalt, plum and aubergine are the easiest to wear. Gold and bronze work the other way, by matching the warm flecks in the iris.
Can brown eyes wear green eyeshadow?
Yes. Emerald, olive and khaki look rich next to brown, especially as a shimmer. Use a brown liner and keep the rest of the face neutral so the green is the one colour on the eye.
What is a good everyday eye for brown eyes?
A matte warm taupe or caramel through the crease, a bronze or champagne shimmer on the lid and brown mascara. You need one blending brush and a fingertip.
