Makeup for fair skin

Fair skin shows colour fast. A blush or bronzer that looks soft on a deeper skin tone can look strong on yours, so build pigment in thin layers. Undertone matters as much as depth. Fair skin can be cool and pink, warm and peachy, neutral or olive, and that decides which foundations, bronzers and reds sit right on you.

Below are our looks on two women with fair skin, one with green eyes and one with blue. Compare the deep maroon lip in Pakistani Bridal Makeup with the rosy flush across the nose in Douyin Makeup. Choose one and try it on your own selfie to see it against your undertone.

Tips for fair skin

  • Find your undertone on the skin of your jaw in daylight, next to a white sheet of paper. Pink or red points to cool, peach or yellow to warm, and a grey-green cast to olive.
  • Choose a bronzer only one or two shades deeper than your skin, in a soft neutral brown rather than an orange one. For contour, a cool taupe looks more like a real shadow on fair skin.
  • Tap blush on with a light hand and build it up. Soft pink and peach are the easy picks, and berry works for evening if you blend the edges well.
  • Match red lipstick to your undertone. A blue-red, like the true red in Classic Red Lip, sits well on cool and neutral fair skin, while an orange-red or coral-red sits well on warm skin.
  • Keep brows close to your hair colour, or a shade lighter if your hair is very dark. A brow pencil much darker than your hair looks harsh against fair skin.
  • If you see blue or purple under your eyes, use a peach or bisque corrector before concealer. Fair skin shows those shadows clearly, and the corrector means you need a thinner layer of concealer on top.

Questions

How do I pick a foundation shade for fair skin?
Match it to your jaw in daylight and choose by undertone as well as depth. If a fair shade looks grey on you, try a warmer one. If it looks orange or yellow, try a pinker or more neutral one.
Can I wear bronzer if my skin is very fair?
Yes, if the shade is right. Choose one no more than two shades deeper than your skin, with a neutral or soft brown base rather than an orange one. Sweep it lightly across the forehead, cheekbones and nose, where the sun would hit.
Which eyeshadow colours work on fair skin?
Almost any, but deep shades show stronger on fair skin than on deeper tones, so blend them further out. Soft browns, taupes, rose gold and champagne are easy everyday picks. Deep plum, navy and black work for evening if you diffuse the edges.
