Retro makeup looks

Each decade here has one look with its own method. 1920s Makeup is a rounded charcoal eye with no wing and a deep berry lip. 70s Makeup is bronzed skin with frosted gold-bronze lids and spiky lashes. 80s Makeup goes electric blue and purple up to the brow, and 90s Makeup is matte and brown, with a dark lip liner.

Y2K Makeup covers the early 2000s, with icy-blue frost on the lid, rhinestones under the eyes and lots of pale pink gloss. Old Hollywood Glam, a thick black wing and a cherry-red lip, is in the library too. Try a few decades on your selfie before a themed party.

Retro makeup tips

  • Start with the eye shape, since each decade has its own. The 1920s eye is round with no wing, the 80s colour runs all the way up to the brow, and the Y2K liner is a thin line with a tiny flick.
  • Match the finish to the decade. 90s Makeup has no shimmer anywhere, while the 70s and Y2K looks use frosted shadow on the lid.
  • A dark brown liner around a cinnamon-brown lipstick is the 90s lip. The 80s lip is a frosted fuchsia lined in deeper pink, and the Y2K lip is a very glossy pale pink.
  • Blush placement changes by decade too. The 1920s look puts rose-pink in a round patch on the apples, the 70s drapes terracotta up to the temples, and the 80s paints a hot-pink stripe.
  • To wear a decade every day, take one part of it. The 90s brown-lined lip or the 70s bronzed skin with a glossy caramel lip both work with a plain eye.

Questions

What does 80s makeup look like?
Bright and bold. Our 80s look blends electric blue on the lid into bright purple up to the brow, lines the lower waterline in blue, sweeps a hot-pink blush stripe toward the temples and finishes with a frosted fuchsia lip.
Which retro look is easiest to do?
90s Makeup. It uses only matte browns, a soft brown smudge for liner and a lined brown lip, with no glitter or graphic shapes. 70s Makeup is the next easiest, with bronzer, a frosted lid and a glossy lip.
Can I try a retro look from Pinterest?
Yes. Add a screenshot of the pin, or paste an Instagram post link, with your selfie. TryOnMyLook adds only that makeup, in about 20 seconds.
