Monolid makeup

A monolid has no visible crease, so the lid is one smooth surface from the lashes up to the brow. That gives you a large area for colour. The main rule is to check everything with your eyes open. When you open them, the skin above can fold down over the lid, and liner or shadow close to the lashes can disappear.

The pictures show our looks on two women with light skin and monolid eyes. Classic Smokey Eye blends charcoal-brown up from the lashes into a soft edge, and Festival Glitter covers the lid in iridescent shadow. Pick one and try it on your own selfie.

Tips for monolids

  • Blend shadow as a gradient, darkest at the lash line and fading up toward the brow. This puts the depth where you can see it with your eyes open, without needing a crease.
  • Draw liner thicker than you think you need, then open your eyes and check. A line that looks bold with the eye closed can shrink to a thin edge or vanish under the lid.
  • If you want a crease effect, draw a floating line above the lid. Graphic Eyeliner draws one where a crease would sit and joins it to the wing.
  • Press a matching shadow over pencil liner to set it. That stops the pencil printing a second line onto the skin above when your eyes are open.
  • If your lashes grow straight or point down, curl them and use a waterproof mascara, which holds a curl longer.
  • Use shimmer and glitter freely, since a monolid gives a wide, flat area for them. Festival Glitter puts a holographic shadow across the whole lid.

Questions

How do you apply eyeshadow on monolids?
Start with the darkest shade right along the lash line and blend it up into a lighter one, so the colour fades toward the brow. Check with your eyes open and take the colour higher if the lid hides it.
What eyeliner is best for monolids?
A waterproof gel or liquid liner, because it is less likely to print onto the skin above. Draw it thicker than you would on other eye shapes, and keep any wing straight or slightly lifted, drawn with your eyes open.
